The Financing Question Most Franchise Candidates Ask First
March 20, 2026The royalty structure is one of the first numbers most franchise candidates ask about, and it’s also one of the most misunderstood parts of the agreement. Before you compare royalty percentages across brands, it’s worth understanding what that percentage is actually paying for.

A Royalty Isn’t a Fee for the Name
It’s easy to think of a royalty as rent for the brand name above the door, but that framing misses what’s actually included: ongoing curriculum development, marketing support, operational systems, and a corporate team actively working to keep the brand competitive. A lower royalty percentage attached to a brand with weaker ongoing support isn’t automatically the better deal.
Compare the Whole Package, Not Just the Percentage
Two franchises with different royalty rates can end up costing an owner about the same once you account for what each fee actually funds. A brand with a higher royalty but stronger enrollment marketing support, more frequent curriculum updates, or better site-selection guidance can outperform a lower-royalty brand that leaves owners to figure more out on their own.

How Creative World School Structures It
Our royalty structure is built to scale with a school’s enrollment, so the fee tracks with actual revenue rather than sitting as a flat cost that’s hardest to absorb in a school’s early ramp-up period. That alignment matters most in year one and two, when a new owner needs the fee structure working with their cash flow, not against it.
Ask These Questions Before You Sign Anything
What specifically does the royalty fund, beyond use of the brand name? How often is the curriculum updated, and who pays for that? What marketing support is included versus billed separately? A transparent franchisor should be able to answer all three without hesitation.
Creative World School’s franchise development team walks every candidate through the full fee structure and what it funds before any commitment is made. If you’d like a clear breakdown, reach out and we’ll walk you through the numbers.
